The point of cryptocurrencies originally was that they would be currencies not assets - i.e. you could do currency type things with them like buy food and stuff.
A big breakthrough in this space came in September 2013, when Coinpayments.net was launched. They provided shopping cart software that could take cryptocurrency payments, and the cost was a small transaction fee levied on the retailer (0.5%, which is way lower than what the credit card processors charge).
The number of supported coins is vast - 54 coins at the moment. The list of supported coins is at the bottom of this post.
Unfortunately not a lot of ecommerce retailers have bothered to do anything with this software from the looks of their store list. Some retailers have enabled payment for most of the coins, others just for BTC and LTC.
Goods on sale range from books to heating appliances. LTC has the biggest presence, followed by Doge with 34 stores and Devcoin with 21 stores.
If you have run out of money and are looking to your crypytocurrency to buy you some food, only Devcoin caters to you. The Devcoin store sells Walmart and Tacobell vouchers.
Is any of this stuff important? Well the more uses for a coin the more of a network effect you get. Coins that just exist to be mined and dumped on exchanges are kind of pointless.
