Altcoins that have established communities tend to hold their value longer than alts that rely on miners switching to it because the mining difficulty is low. Miners tend to dump coins as soon as they get them, to cover costs, and then move onto the next easy alt to mine.
Alts with communities however tend to have a substantial number of people willing to hold and even buy on the lows. They also work hard at establishing an economy for their coin - places you can spend them to buy real things. In other words, they form a base and support for their coin, ensuring it will never get sold to zero.
So how do you judge how big an alt community is?
1. Looking at the number of subscribers on their subreddit.
